These are called “pathogenic” mutations as they are associated with an increase in one’s risk of developing cancers. I offer genetic testing to anyone who has a high-risk for carrying a mutation (usually covered by most insurance plans). Considering 13% of all individuals with a cancer history carry a mutation, it’s very reasonable for anyone with a cancer history to consider getting one of these tests if they are interested in knowing whether they might be a mutation carrier.
